Cats are generally accused of being standoffish, at least compared to dogs, and a team of researchers from the University of Japan appears to have verified this behavior.
Atsuko Saito and Kazutaka Shinozuka say that during their evolutionary process, cats, unlike dogs, didn’t depend on humans for voice instruction. Therefore, that’s why domestic cats often don’t come when called.
To further test their theory, Saito and Shinozuka had owners of 20 cats call each of their pets by name from an area where they couldn’t be seen. Each cat moved its head in the direction of its master’s voice and pricked up its ears but made no effort to move.
Although the proof might be conclusive, cat lovers will no doubt remain convinced that their pets love them unconditionally.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and no, Virginia, not all stores will be open Thanksgiving Day, contrary to what you might have heard.
There has been something of a backlash, given the number of retailers that will swing open their doors Thanksgiving Day so shoppers can get a jump on Black Friday sales.
It's not just those working at the stores who feel put out by the development but the customers who the retailers hope to attract, despite the fact that an estimated 35 million Americans either went to a store or shopped online last Thanksgiving Day.
Store that won't be open this Thursday include: BJs, Costco, Dillard's, Home Depot, Marshalls, Nordstrom and T.J. Maxx.

A boss can get the most out of workers when they let them know how much they’re appreciated, according to a new study by the online career site Glassdoor.
This flies in the face of some opinions that employees will deliver more while working in a culture of fear.
In fact, just 40 percent of respondents in the Glassdoor survey said they’re inspired to work harder when the boss is breathing down their necks and they're concerned that failure could lead to the unemployment line.
On the other hand, eight in ten workers told Glassdoor they’d be willing to put in extra effort when the boss lets them know they’re doing a good job and they’re an asset to the company.
Forty-six percent of workers say that an occasional treat like snacks, meals or thank you-notes improve morale while nearly a quarter would enjoy a social event outside the office such as a holiday party or happy hour.
