Wallkill Valley students earn academic honors

Thirteen students at Wallkill Valley Regional High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on The College Board's Advanced Placement Exams.

The Advanced Placement Program offers students an opportunity to take college level courses while still in high school and earn college credit based on their successful performance on AP exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.9 million students worldwide who took AP exams earned award recognition.

At Wallkill Valley, Michael Astor, Shane Brown, Thomas Darragh, Edward Freisinger, Mary Lacalamita and Carolyn Readmond qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams scores of 3 or higher.

Three students qualified for the AP Scholars with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Anthony Castellucci, Nicholas Foulds and Ryan Paulik.

Four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Dallis Guillemin, Andrew Kim, Jessica Nardolillo and Daniel Yun. Kim also was recognized as a National AP Scholar, as he earned scores of 4.0 or higher on eight exams.

Edward P. Freisinger, a student at Wallkill Valley Regional High School, has been named a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
