Twenty years ago this week, Billboard magazine introduced its Pop Songs chart, which measures radio airplay of songs only, as opposed to sales. To celebrate the anniversary, the publication rounded up the 100 biggest hits ever on that particular chart, based on how high they climbed and how long they stuck around. And the #1 biggest hit ever is..."Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls.
According to Billboard, "Iris" came out on top because the 1998 ballad, from the soundtrack of the movie City of Angels, spent four weeks at #1 on the chart, and 39 weeks on the chart overall. The Goo Goo Dolls also have another song in the top 10: "Slide."
In at #2 is one-hit wonders Real McCoy, with the 1994 hit "Another Night," followed by OneRepublic's "Apologize" at #3.
Of the biggest 100 hits ever to make the chart, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 each have the most: four.
Here's the rest of the top 10:
4. "Hanging by a Moment," Lifehouse
5. "Smooth," Santana featuring Rob Thomas
6. "Truly Madly Deeply," Savage Garden
7. "Don't Speak," No Doubt
8. "Here Without You," 3 Doors Down
9. "Slide," Goo Goo Dolls
10. "Since U Been Gone," Kelly Clarkson
