In a nostalgic throwback to the 1980s, New Jersey is considering reviving its classic blue license plates. A bill reintroducing these plates, which were in circulation from 1979 to 1991, has been referred to the State Senate Transportation Committee for review.
The iconic blue plates, characterized by their light blue color with yellow or buff-colored characters, have a sentimental value for many New Jersey residents who recall them fondly. The plates were replaced in 1992 with a yellow background and black characters, but the old design has never been forgotten and is still seen on some vehicles throughout the state.
State Senator Kristin Corrado, who introduced the bill, believes that bringing back the classic design will not only evoke nostalgia but also generate revenue for transportation projects within the state. The proposed legislation stipulates an application fee of $50 for the classic plates, in addition to the standard registration fee. There would also be an annual fee of $10 for maintaining the specialty plates.
"The return of the blue plates is more than just a nod to our past," Corrado told northjersey.com. "It's a creative way to fund important transportation projects and infrastructure improvements across New Jersey."
The proposal has garnered support from both lawmakers and residents who see it as an opportunity to preserve a piece of New Jersey's history while also contributing to its future. If passed, New Jersey will join a growing list of states that offer retro-style license plates.
The State Senate Transportation Committee is expected to review the bill in the coming weeks. If approved, the Department of Motor Vehicles would be responsible for implementing the change, including the production and distribution of the new plates.
