Hackettstown Cyclist Death Under Investigation

A fatal motor vehicle accident in Hackettstown on Monday, February 5th, is under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office. The incident resulted in the death of an adult male, whose identity remains undisclosed at this time.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on Willow Grove Street near Brook Hollow Drive. An unmarked police SUV, operated by a trooper of the New Jersey State Police, made contact with a cyclist. Following the collision, the cyclist was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center. At 7:17 a.m., the medical professionals pronounced the cyclist deceased.

Investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances that led to the crash and the events that transpired surrounding it. The Attorney General's Office is conducting this investigation, following Directive 2019-4 which requires the Attorney General's Office to investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in their official capacity or while the deceased was in custody.
