New Jersey’s black bear hunt is back in action today and will continue through Saturday. This hunt, known as Segment B, allows hunters to use muzzleloaders or shotguns.

The first segment of the hunt, Segment A, took place in October and was exclusively for archers and hunters using muzzleloaders. During this period, a total of 331 black bears were harvested, contributing to the state’s wildlife management efforts.

The goal set by New Jersey’s Fish & Wildlife Department is to harvest 20-percent of the black bear population. This is part of a broader strategy to manage and maintain a healthy and sustainable black bear population in the state.

If the combined tally from the two segments doesn’t reach this target, the hunt will be extended from December 13th through 16th. This extension will provide additional opportunities for hunters to contribute to the state’s wildlife management goals.

The season bag limit is one bear over 75 pounds live weight, or 50 pounds dressed, per segment, regardless of the number of permits the hunter holds. Hunters may not attempt to take or kill a black bear weighing less than 75 pounds (live weight), or less than 50 pounds dressed. Additionally, hunters may not attempt to take or kill an adult black bear that is in the presence of cubs.

The legal hunting hours for black bears are half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
