Historic Franklin Borough thinking about ways to encourage tourism

This week the Franklin Borough Council will be talking about establishing a Historic Preservation Commission. The hope is that Franklin's rich mining history could one day attract tourists to the area. Sussex County already has wonderful resorts and golf. Preserved and rehabilitated mines and historic buildings in Franklin would be a nice addition to what we have already in this area. I love seeing borough historian Phil Crabb's Facebook posts. After a public hearing and with council approval the commission would be set up. The council would appoint it's members. With the commission the borough would then apply for grants to attract tourism. Zinc mines in Franklin and Ogdensburg operated from the 1830's to 1980's. Franklin is known as the "Fluorescent Mineral Capitol of the World." Some of the minerals beneath Franklin cannot be found anywhere else on Earth.
